Between January and April 2019 six Year 12 students – Lauren Simmonds, Joe Arnold, Ellie Seabrook, Bradley Smith, Megan Young-Rogers and Alecia Bell – all participated in The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme alongside their Sixth Form studies. The purpose of taking part in the programme was to help them to develop a deeper academic understanding and acquire the skills required to successfully complete a University degree course in the future.
They initially visited King’s College University London for the launch event, and were then mentored by a PhD Tutor. They took part in a series of Science-based tutorials, designed to develop their critical thinking and their analytical, evaluative and independent research and learning skills. Their final assessment was a 2,500-word assignment, which was marked by their PhD Tutor as if they were a first year University undergraduate.
Three of the students obtained marks for their final assessments which were equivalent to a 1st degree; the others achieving the equivalent of either a 2:1 or 2:2. These high grades are a reflection of the commitment, determination and resilience shown by the students in successfully completing this extra-curricular programme, alongside their A Level studies.
To mark the end of the Programme they all attended a Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday 7th May at Keble College, University of Oxford. Congratulations to them all!
