At Mascalls, we believe that learning shouldn’t stop once the school day ends or when a homework assignment is completed. In order to compete with the very best, it is essential that our students develop and frequently use their independent learning skills. These skills will help build confidence and consolidate the learning done in the classroom.
What is Independent Learning?
Independent learning is when students take the initiative to explore and study their subjects beyond the explicit support given by their teacher. This can include:
- Choosing new topics to read or research.
- Completing homework assignments.
- Planning and tracking their own study schedules.
- Finding creative ways to approach problems.
- Reflecting on learning goals and evaluating progress
Benefits for Students
- Builds Deeper Understanding: Research by the Education Endowment Foundation shows that mastering self-reflection and planning can accelerate progress (up to seven months’ worth of additional progress).
- Strengthens Motivation and Resilience: Working on tasks independently helps students develop persistence and problem-solving skills.
- Closes Attainment Gaps: Not every family can afford private tutoring. By mastering independent learning students can stretch themselves without relying solely on external help.
- Prepares for Future Success: In a fast-changing world, students who know how to work independently are better equipped to face the challenges of the future job market.
Tips for Parents & Carers
- Check MCAS daily and double-check the homework due for that week.
- Check that your child is using all of the support structures listed in the Homework Guide for students.
- Contact the subject teacher/college team if you encounter any barriers so that we can arrange support.
