Induction Days for new Year 12 students 2020

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation Mascalls Academy will not be inviting prospective Year 12 students in to the school on 22nd, 23rd and 24th June for induction activities, as previously planned. Current Mascalls students in Year 11 should access “The Common Room” Google Classroom (access code lfx43md) for their induction materials.  For students from other schools, you should receive preparatory work for the subjects that you have indicated on your application form, which will be emailed to you in July and which you should complete during the summer vacation period.

You are advised to check your KentChoices account regularly, for further information about GCSE results day and confirming your Sixth Form place at Mascalls Academy in August.

Monday 22nd to Wednesday 24th June 2020

All students wishing to join Mascalls Academy Sixth Form in September 2020 are expected to attend these three induction days.

What is the purpose of the three days?

  • To get a flavour of life in Mascalls Sixth Form.  Even if you have been at the school for five years from Year 7 to Year 11, you haven’t seen the school from the perspective of being a Sixth Form student.
  • To attend “taster” lessons in your chosen subjects to see if you have made the right choices.  If you change your mind you will have the opportunity to trial other subjects as well, and then discuss any changes with the Sixth Form team on the final afternoon.
  • To undertake work assignments in your own time, which will help you and your Teachers assess if you are likely to be successful in your chosen subjects.
  • To meet other students who may be joining you in Year 12 in September.

Nearer the time we will publish a Sixth Form Induction Day Programme for 2020, with a session plan for each of the three days, which you will be able to download from this page.

What should I bring with me?

You will be attending actual subject lessons during these three days and so you will need to bring appropriate school equipment with you, such as pens, paper, ruler etc.

Will I be given any homework?

You will be set homework for each of the subjects that you attend lessons for, and this homework will need to be completed over the three days and handed in on Wednesday, 24th June.  This homework will be marked and may be referred to on GCSE results day to help inform the decision  making process about whether you will be admitted to the Sixth Form, and if so, which subjects you will be studying.

In addition, you will be set some reading and work assignments to complete during the summer vacation period; the work assignments will need to be handed in on the first day of term in September.

What should I wear?

The Mascalls Academy dress code for Sixth Form students can be found here.  Students are required to adhere to this dress code at all times during school hours and whilst out of school attending organised school trips.  Failure to observe this dress code will result in students being issued with a standards detention, or being sent home to change.

During the three induction days you should dress according to this code.

If you have selected Dance as one of your chosen subjects, and plan to take part in the Dance taster lessons, you should bring clothing with you to change in to which is suitable for dancing in – leggings or track suit bottoms and a loose tee-shirt are recommended.  Training shoes won’t be needed, as you will be dancing barefoot.

What will the catering arrangements be?

The Marie Curie Sixth Form in J block is space which is dedicated for use by Sixth Form students only.  It has its own small canteen where you can buy hot and cold food, drinks and snacks at break and lunch time each day.  During the three induction days you will be able to use this space and purchase food and drinks from this canteen, using cash or (if you are a current Mascalls student) the school’s cashless system.

If you prefer to bring a packed lunch to school with you, then you will be able to sit in the Sixth Form Centre to eat it.  Our current Year 12 students will be sitting their mock exams during this period, so will not be in school for lessons and therefore you will have the space to yourselves.

I can’t attend these induction days – what should I do?

These induction days are an important part of the transition process between lower school and Sixth Form study and students are expected to attend them if they are serious about joining Mascalls Academy Sixth Form in September.  However, if there is a genuine reason why you cannot attend then you must inform our Sixth Form Support Assistant, Michelle Preston by email to or by telephone to +44(0)1892 835366 extn 197 as soon as possible so that this can be recorded, and the work referred to above can be sent to you electronically.  You will need to complete the work and submit it in line with what is required of the other students who take part in the induction days.
