Post-16 Information

dress code

We expect you to be smartly and formally dressed at all times, as you would be if working in a smart professional environment. As well as representing the Academy, you also need to reflect the expectations we place on students lower down the school to wear attire which reflects the aims and values of the Academy.

We understand that a person’s dress and appearance are matters of personal choice and self-expression. However, we believe that adults should dress in ways which are appropriate to their role and this may need to be different to how they dress when not at work.

Students may dress in accordance with their gender presentation but should follow the guidelines as outlined below.

Clothing for specific lessons such as PE, Art and Dance should not be worn in public areas of the school.  Students should change before attending other lessons.

male dress code

  • Formal Business suit or smart trousers with blazer or jacket
  • Formal shirt (a tie should you wish to wear one)
  • Formal, polishable shoes (no trainers or canvas shoes – Vans, Converse or similar. No flip-flops, sliders or Ugg boots).
  • Smart V-neck or round neck jumpers and waistcoats may also be worn underneath a blazer or on their own with a shirt.

female dress code

  • Blazer or Jacket.
  • Smart V-neck or round neck jumpers or a waistcoat may also be worn underneath a blazer or on their own with a shirt. If you wear a roll neck jumper it should be accompanied by a blazer over the top.
  • Formal skirt or formal dress (regardless of style or shape will need to be of appropriate length) or formal trousers or shorts.
  • Blouse or shirt – should not be low cut, bare shoulders or backs. Bra straps and midriffs should not be visible.
  • Formal plain, polishable shoes (no trainers or canvas shoes – Vans, Converse or similar. No flip-flops, sliders or Ugg boots).

Unacceptable items

  • Skimpy shorts or hot pants
  • Sheer, low-cut tops or spaghetti straps
  • Hats of any kind (in lessons)
  • Sunglasses (in lessons)
  • Over-sized brand names, slogans or logos
  • Hoodies
  • Tracksuits
  • Denim
  • Trainers/canvas shoes including Converse or skater shoes
  • Ugg boots, flip flops or casual sandals such as Birkenstock
  • Soiled, frayed, ripped or faded clothing

Most students meet our expectations, but those who do not conform will be sent home to remedy the problem or if this is not possible will be issued a Standards Detention and may be required to spend the day in the Student Referral Centre.

Attendance & Absence

‘Every Academy Day Counts’

sickness

If your child is unwell and unable to attend School you must inform Karen Marsh, our Sixth Form Administrator by email (karen.marsh@mascallsacademy.org.uk) or by telephone 01892 839042 by 8.30am on each day that they are absent so that school registers can be updated.  Failure to do this may result in your child having “unauthorised” absences, which may ultimately be dealt with under the school’s disciplinary procedures.  Our Safeguarding Policy also requires that we know where our students are at all times during school hours and therefore it is important that you keep us informed if your child needs to be out of school for any reason.

medical appointments

Whilst we understand that in an emergency situation you will need to arrange for your child to see a medical professional at short notice and may not be in a position to inform us in advance of this; in other non-urgent cases we ask that GP, Hospital, Dentist/Orthodontist and other medical appointments are booked for dates and times outside of school hours.

Where this is not possible, we ask firstly that you try to book them at a time when your child does not have a timetabled lesson, and secondly that confirmation of the appointment date and time, either via an appointment card or letter, or by way of a telephone call or email, is provided to Karen Marsh, who will then enter the information on to the schools’ register.  Failure to provide appropriate confirmation of the appointment will again result in the absence being classified as “unauthorised”.

driving tests & lessons

We understand that it is important for your child to undertake their test in daylight hours and therefore at certain times of the year it may have to be carried out during School hours.  However if this is the case then we require sight of the confirmation letter issued by the Test Centre so that the information can be entered on to the register.

We will not authorise absence for driving lessons, which can quite reasonably be arranged outside of school time.

visits to universities & colleges, funerals & other planned absences

Please e-mail Karen Marsh in advance of the visit so that appropriate authorisation can be given and information entered on to the register.

We also expect students to inform their subject Teachers of any periods of authorised absence so that work can be provided to students that they might miss in the lesson if they are not present on that particular day.

jcq regulations & Ofqual guides

contingency day

These are now timetabled for the afternoons of the 6 and 13 June as well as the day of 26 June 2024. The designation of a ‘contingency day’ within the common examination timetable is in the event of national or significant local disruption to examinations in the United Kingdom. It is part of the awarding bodies’ standard contingency planning for examinations. Centres must therefore remind candidates that they must remain available until Wednesday 26 June 2024, should an awarding body need to invoke its contingency plan.

Please can all students/parents/carers make a note of the contingency exam date in the event that an awarding body needs to invoke its contingency plan.

certificates

Certificate Information

The documents you receive on Results Day are Statements of Results and NOT certificates. The certificates are printed and sent to us at Mascalls a long time after the results themselves. This is to allow time for any requested reviews and appeals.

You will be notified when certificates are ready for collection and you have three options:

  • To collect them in person from Reception at a pre-arranged time.
  • To provide someone with written authorisation to collect them from Reception on your behalf at a pre-arranged time.
  • To request that they be sent to you by Recorded Delivery. This can be arranged upon receipt of a cheque for £4 made payable to Mascalls Academy.

Correspondence will be emailed out to Year 13 and Year 11 that left in the Summer, prior to Christmas regarding collection of certificates. If you have uncollected certificates, please email the Exams Manager to arrange a collection.

Certificates that have not been collected after one year will be confidentially disposed of. The examination boards do not require the school to keep the certificates any longer.

Each Exam Board seems to have a different system for dealing with lost certificates. You should not assume that you will be able to buy replacements, so keep them safe!

It is becoming increasingly important that you keep your original certificates safe to show future further education establishments or future employers. We can provide you with a letter (on headed notepaper) confirming your grades and signed by the Exams Officer. This may satisfy an employer who has asked to see your certificates.
